Surkhet : Chief Minister of Karnali province Mahendra Bahadur Shahi has said that expert volunteers have a crucial role in the social life.
Addressing a workshop on the implementation of the disaster risk reduction and management act here today, he said the expert volunteers were needed for the development of the society.
The workshop is organized by the Province Disaster Management Committee with technical support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
“We are exchanging our expertise for money. We should utilize our expertise as volunteers in the adverse situations,” Chief Minister Shahi said, urging the experts to prove their expertise for social good and not as something to sell by preparing power point.
The Chief Minister reiterated that more attention would be paid for incorporating policy matters on disaster risk reduction in the provincial and local level laws and the provincial government would move ahead with responsibility for this.
Expert on disaster risk reduction Gangalal Tuladhar called on the government to formulate laws of strategic importance for minimizing the risk of natural disasters like earthquake, flood, landslide and soil erosion as well as man-made disasters.
He suggested constructing the infrastructures only by studying the geography of Nepal which is in the 11th pace in terms of earthquake risk and 50th position in terms of road accidents.
Tuladhar said the provincial capital Surkhet itself was not free from earthquake risk and hence the need of constructing the structures taking this factor into account.
Province minister for internal affairs and law Naresh Bhandari, agriculture minister Bimala KC, tourism minister Nanda Singh Budha, province government chief secretary Ram Prasad Thapaliya, among other officials had participated in the programme. (RSS)
